Portland City Hall, U.S.A.

Rainbow-colored historical architecture with robust lighting

Portland City Hall, built in 1909 on the ashes of the previous city hall, serves as the central hub for the city’s government. Inspired by New York City Hall, the Beaux-Arts building has a huge historical significance, which led to its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

The City Hall has three stories with wings forming a U-shape. Centered is a mansard roof from which arises a tall, domed tower. As a civic structure, the lighting strategy must eloquently blend solemn classical elements with vibrant creativity, reflecting both dignity and vitality within the architecture.

In the project, advanced design and illumination simulations were used for testing. ROLEDS MatriX wall washers were strategically chosen to illuminate the roof and wing facades, complemented by MatriX floodlights that highlighted the tower and front facade. All fixtures utilized RGBW 4-in-1 chips to blend a vibrant rainbow of colors. To uphold the building’s profound historical significance, careful preservation principles were followed, employing DMX Wireless control to streamline the wiring and respect its original structure. This approach successfully achieved a harmonious balance between aesthetic enhancement and historical preservation.

The lighting system facilitated zone-specific and time-based adjustments, seamlessly integrating the lights with the surroundings. During regular hours, white tones define the stature of the government building, while holidays showcase a vibrant array of colors, ensuring both functional lighting and aesthetically pleasing night scenes while maintaining energy efficiency.
